Continuing a Family Tradition

Dr. Gray’s career as a prosthodontist carries on a proud family tradition of dental excellence that dates back nearly 60 years.

Dr. Gray’s father, Jordan Gray, is the founder and owner of Gray Dental Laboratory, a local facility that he has operated for more than 30 years. Jordan Gray fabricates many types of dental restorations by hand, including veneers, aesthetic crowns, implant prosthesis, and hybrid alloy bars. Dr. Gray enjoys working closely with his father and the high-quality products from his laboratory.

Dr. Gray states, “Such a close working relationship with my father and constant reliable laboratory support is a tremendous blessing and makes me a better dentist.”

Dr. Ted grew up with his brother, John, in Birmingham, Alabama. He received a Bachelor of Science in biology from Birmingham-Southern College and graduated from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 2003.

After working for several years as an associate dentist at Oneonta Dental Center, he founded McCalla Dental with his brother, John. They wanted to start a dental practice that would provide all aspects of a patient’s dental needs in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Their vision was to create a dental practice that would benefit the community as well as the patients.

For Dr. Ted, it is such a pleasure to be able to work with family every day, while doing what he loves. Being able to provide a wide variety of dental care under one roof is very rewarding to McCalla Dental’s patients.

For Dr. Ted, being able to restore and educate so many patients about their dental health with such a great team is most gratifying. Being able to give a patient back their smile is what McCalla Dental is all about. He also enjoys participating in their yearly free dental treatment day.

Dr. Ted is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry. He is continually studying new methods and techniques in dentistry, focusing on the areas of cosmetic dentistry, including veneers and crowns, and endodontics (root canal therapy).

John Poczatek, D.M.D.

Dr. John grew up with his brother, Ted, in the Birmingham area. He graduated summa cum laude from Birmingham-Southern College with a degree in computer science before receiving a D.M. D. with honors from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, where he met and married fellow graduate, Dr. Wendy. He received a Certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry from the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry in 2005.

In 2005, Dr. John moved to the McCalla area and started McCalla Dental with his brother, Ted. Once their schooling was over, they knew it was time to start the passion that would consume their future years. Their vision was to create a dental practice that would benefit the community as well as the patients. They were able to shape the direction of the office by putting up their own shingles and using their experience from the other dentistry jobs they had worked.

Dr. John and his wife, Dr. Wendy, both work at McCalla Dental. As a family business, dentistry weaves its way into every conversation. They can take a vacation to the other side of the world, see something that relates to dentistry, and always have someone to share it with.

Dr. John is a member of the Birmingham District Dental Society, the American Dental Association, the Alabama Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry. He enjoys participating in McCalla Dental’s annual free dental day in the community, which has allowed the team to donate approximately $250,000 in dental services to the community in just three years.

Seeing the positive impact that McCalla Dental makes on the community is what makes Dr. John’s job rewarding. He appreciates the patients placing their trust in McCalla Dental, and in turn, McCalla Dental strives to give them a dental experience like none other in the state.

Dr. John’s professional interests in dentistry include blending technology with patient care and comfort. He continually seeks advances in dental technology to make sure he is providing his patients the best in care for services such as digital radiography, dental anesthesia and digital impressions. Additionally, Dr. John is one of only a few General Practitioners who has achieved Preferred Status with Invisalign.

Dr. John and Dr. Wendy have two beautiful daughters. He enjoys spending his free time outdoors, usually in the backyard, either gardening or landscaping.

Jake Nolen, D.M.D.

Dr. Nolen attended Auburn University and graduated magna cum laude in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences. He went on to earn his dental degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Dental School in 2013.

After graduation, he completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at the Foundry Dental Center in Bessemer, Alabama. During that time, he gained extensive experience in dental implant placement, bone grafting, and other surgical procedures.

Dr. Gray was one of Dr. Nolen’s instructors during his residency. After being introduced to Dr. John and Dr. Ted, Dr. Nolen was ecstatic to join the McCalla Dental team at their state of the art facility in 2014.

Dr. Nolen loves transforming a dreaded trip to the dentist into a positive experience. He believes that McCalla Dental’s true strength is the convenience for patients to get most procedures done at one office — where they are comfortable and familiar with the friendly staff.

Dr. Nolen enjoys changing people’s lives for the better by restoring their smiles. He believes that no one should be afraid to smile, or have to worry about their dental health. He aims to give his patients a positive experience at the dentist and is dedicated to providing painless, comfortable treatment.

Dr. Nolen is a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, and the American Dental Political Action Committee. Since graduating, he has furthered his ability to provide excellent care by acquiring additional training and experience in various aspects of dentistry, including implant dentistry, bone grafting and sinus lifts for implant placement, IV sedation, tooth extractions, and root canals.

Dr. Nolen is very involved with the community and has donated his time to many causes, including his time as a volunteer dentist and board member at the Foundry Dental Clinic, an organization that provides low-cost dental care to the less fortunate in Bessemer.

Outside the office, Dr. Nolen spends his free time with his wife and enjoys reading and traveling. He loves active sports such as biking, tennis, and watersports, and he also takes part in amateur golf tournaments.

Wendy Poczatek, D.M.D.

Dr. Wendy is from a military family; she was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and raised in Biloxi, Mississippi. She graduated from the University of South Alabama in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science, and from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 2004, where she also met and married Dr. John.

Dr. Wendy received a Certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry from the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry in 2005. She and Dr. John returned to the Birmingham area, where she went into private practice with Dr. Kuntal Pandit.

In 2007 and 2008, Dr. Wendy assumed the practices of two retiring Bessemer dentists, Dr. Robert Phillips and Dr. Earl Pate.

Dr. Wendy joined McCalla Dental as an Associate Dentist in 2009. The practice was founded to restore and impact the lives of those that entrust McCalla Dental with their care. She believes that their work goes beyond the smile.

For Dr. Wendy, the desire to be with family is intentional. Because McCalla Dental began with two brothers, there has been a natural progression to grow the practice as a family. When she walks through the door every day, she is surrounded by people with whom she gets to share work, play, celebrations, struggles, and mourning. She feels loved, supported, and connected by their common purpose. They are stronger together, and that shows in their work.

Dr. Wendy is a member of the Birmingham District Dental Society, the American Dental Association, the Alabama Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry. She has continued with many advanced technical classes, focusing on senior dental care issues such as dentures, periodontal disease, and dry mouth syndrome. She loves educating patients to empower them to make good decisions concerning their oral health and believes that good oral health contributes to one’s physical and emotional health.

When she isn’t working, Dr. Wendy enjoys vegetable gardening and cooking, especially with her husband and her daughters. She loves art and design, and she enjoys creative things like cake decorating and fingerprint art.
