What are dental implants?
Dental Implants are the latest advance in dentistry to replace missing or broken down teeth. If you are missing a tooth, or a tooth has decayed past the point where it can be saved and requires removal, a dental implant may be a good treatment option for you.
A tooth implant serves as a synthetic "root" and consists of a titanium post that is placed in your jaw, a second piece called an "abutment" that screws into the implant and provides a base for the new tooth, and finally a porcelain crown that is placed on top of the abutment, and looks and feels like your natural tooth.
Uses of Dental Implants
The most common way to use an implant is to replace an individual missing tooth.
Implants can also be used to anchor a bridge that will replace multiple teeth, as well as to support dentures so that they are held firmly in place and won't slip or move around when you talk or chew.
One of the latest advances in teeth implants allows a dentist to place four implants and immediately secure a set of dentures in place, all in a single visit. This special procedure is called All-On-Four, and Dr. Gray is one of just a few dentists in the area to offer this revolutionary process.

Step 1 : Evaluation
In your evaluation, Dr. Gray will make sure that he collects all of the information that he needs to help you decide on the correct treatment plan.
Dr. Gray will meet with you and evaluate your teeth and bone structure to determine the type of treatment that will be best for you. In addition to a complete physical examination of your mouth, he will take panoramic digital xrays and photographs using our intraoral camera, in order to fully evaluate your bone depth and health. In order to determine your candidacy for implant surgery, he will want to take a complete medical history as well.
Dr. Gray will meet with you and evaluate your teeth and bone structure to determine the type of treatment that will be best for you. In order to determine your candidacy for implant surgery, he will want to take a complete medical history as well.
Step 2: Treatment Plan
Next, Dr. Gray will discuss your treatment options with you, and put together a treatment plan that will help you to restore your mouth to full health and function. He will take into account your budget and your preferences, and make sure that your plan is exactly the right one for you.
Dr. Gray will explain to you what to expect. He will show you using computer imaging or a model exactly what changes you will have in your teeth, and how your smile will change with the use of the implants.
Step 3: Implant surgery
Dr. Gray will use the NobelGuide computer system to carefully plan your surgery.
Next, Dr. Gray will use the innovative NobelGuide computer-design system, to fully plan and implement your implant surgery. With the help our our board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Chabra, he will do the surgery necessary to place the titanium posts for the implants in your jaw.
If you have insufficient bone left in your jaw to support an implant, he may recommend and perform a bone graft, from another location, in order to prepare your jaw for the stress of the implant post.
Step 4: Crown or denture placement
With your implants, you will be able to eat and smile normally again.
While you are healing from your surgery, Dr. Gray will make sure that your replacement tooth or teeth are being perfectly crafted according to his specifications. Your replacement crown or denture will be made from the highest-quality materials, and crafted to look and feel like your natural teeth, at the Gray Dental Laboratory here in Birmingham. Gray Dental was established by Dr. Holt Gray's father, and has been providing quality dental restoration products for more than three decades.
Once you have fully healed, your new teeth will be placed on the implant post. Now all you have to do is – smile, just like John:

Are you a candidate for dental implants?

Before and after Dental Implants
Case 1: Lower implant prosthesis
This patient's lower teeth were too compromised to save. To correct his situation, all the lower teeth were removed, and he had five implants placed. On top of his implants, we fabricated a "hybrid prosthesis" that screws tight and chews like natural teeth.

Case 2: Front implants
Sometimes a comprehensive treatment involves selective removal of teeth that are not worth the investment of repair. In this patient, we removed several front teeth and replaced them with implants.

Case 3: Implant supported dentures
This patient had several dentures before arriving at our office. After a little investigating, it became evident that he did not want to use denture paste or pads anymore and had abundant bone. In order to address the concerns, we placed four implants in the top and bottom jaw and then used these for extra retention on his dentures.
